GENK, Belgium -- Racing Genk has sacked coach Emilio Ferrera after the opening game of the Belgian league.
Ferrera came in to the new season with a two-year contract extension, but did not last beyond an opening 3-1 away loss to KV Mechelen.
After bringing in Ferrera to turn around a dismal season last year, it had high hopes of challenging for the title this season.
But the club said that "while everyone was hoping for a fresh start, the first game against KV Mechelen was surprisingly bad."
Genk has won the Belgian league three times in the last 15 years.
