Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller: Jupp Heynckes has restored my confidence

Thomas Muller has told Sport Bild that Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is behind his return to top form.

Muller set up Bayern's opening goal in the 3-1 victory at Besiktas on Wednesday as Heynckes made Champions League history by winning his 11th game in succession.

Bayern have won 26 games in 28 matches in all competitions, with one draw and one defeat, since the 72-year-old coach returned for his fourth spell at the club.

Muller, who won the Champions League under Heynckes in 2013, has scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists in 32 games this season.

"I am full of self-confidence again since Jupp Heynckes took over as coach, because he has placed a lot of faith in me," Muller said.

"He immediately tried to spur me on during training and games, while making it clear that everything depends on performances on the pitch.

"There was never any guaranteed playing time, but we talked a lot and he placed his trust in me.

"Jupp Heynckes clearly told me that we have a very strong squad so you need top performances. But, of course, his faith in me is stronger than it was before."

Muller scored only five Bundesliga goals under former coach Carlo Ancelotti last season, enduring a 999-minute Bundesliga goal drought.

However, he was reluctant to blame only Ancelotti for that struggle and said: "Everything depends on how the different types of players blend on the pitch."

Bayern, 20 points clear in the Bundesliga, could seal their sixth successive title if they win at RB Leipzig on Sunday and other results go their way.

And Muller, Bayern's stand-in captain during Manuel Neuer's absence with injury, said the current set-up compares with their 2013 Treble-winning season.

"We are still going strong in all three competitions, the coaching staff is the same and we are on a good run. There are parallels to 2013 and we have big goals," he said.

Muller, Bayern's record Champions League scorer with 42 goals, said the 4-0 home win over Barcelona on the way to the 2013 trophy, had been his "best Champions League performance."

"You don't win 4-0 against Barca every day," he said, adding that the penalty shootout defeat to Chelsea in the previous year's final in Munich had been his worst moment.

"It doesn't get any grimmer," he said.
