Bayern Munich seal 2017 Telekom Cup success after win over Mainz

Bayern Munich sealed their first silverware of the year, beating Mainz 2-1 in the 2017 Telekom Cup final courtesy of goals from Franck Ribery and Javi Martinez in Dusseldorf.

For the four-team, 45-minute per game tournament during the Bundesliga's winter break, the stadium roof was closed in Dusseldorf to safeguard against freezing temperatures.

Following a goalless opener against 2.Bundesliga hosts Fortuna Dusseldorf, Bayern progressed to the final after Manuel Neuer produced two fine saves in the resulting penalty shootout.

French winger Ribery then gave Bayern the advantage against Mainz in the final as early as the fourth minute -- exchanging passes with Thomas Muller before expertly firing into the corner.

But Mainz levelled just four minutes later when Andre Ramalho blasted an exquisite drive past a helpless Neuer.

In a pulsating start to the game, record signing Martinez soon restored the Bavarians' lead on 11 minutes, nodding home powerfully unmarked from a corner.

No further goals were added but Bayern comfortably held onto their lead to secure their third Telekom Cup success -- following victories in 2013 and 2014.

However, the tournament win was soured by an injury to Arturo Vidal. The Chilean midfielder left the pitch holding his right rib in agony when substituted with 10 minutes remaining.

Seeking their fifth league title on the trot, league leaders Bayern resume Bundesliga action on Friday in Freiburg.

"It's always nice to win and play well," Ribery told host broadcaster sat1. "But it was important that we found our rhythm as we have a vital game coming up in Freiburg."

Bayern returned to Germany just two days ago after an eight-day training camp in Doha, Qatar.

"We worked really well in Doha, but we have to maintain the level we showed today, keep up the tempo and stay positive," Ribery added. "We've got two away games coming up in Freiburg and Bremen so it's going to be difficult. In Freiburg, we have to go on the attack right away. But we must win these games for our self-confidence, rhythm, everything."
