Bayern's Thomas Muller congratulated after ending goal drought

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti praised Thomas Muller after the Germany forward ended his 999-minute Bundesliga scoring drought with a goal in the 5-0 demolition of struggling Wolfsburg.

Ancelotti said Muller's importance to the team should not be judged on goals alone after he scored his first league goal since April.

"Of course I'm delighted for him," the Italian told his postmatch news conference.

"The goal will do him good, but he does a good job on the pitch and works hard for the team even when he doesn't score."

Arjen Robben put Bayern ahead with a trademark goal on 18 minutes, cutting in from the right to curl past keeper Diego Benaglio and into the top corner.

Robert Lewandowski scored his second consecutive domestic brace with two close range tap-ins before Muller ended his barren spell.

"Goals aren't that important as long as I can play my part," Muller said."You can be happy without goals, but obviously it's nicer with a goal. I'm not a striker anyway, more of an offensive player."

Substitute Douglas Costa added a fifth and, to cap a great day for Bayern, previously unbeaten RB Leipzig surprisingly lost 1-0 to lowly Ingolstadt to surrender top spot.

Bayern have their players' Christmas party on Saturday evening and Muller said he expected that regaining the Bundesliga leadership "will be a great catalyst to enjoy ourselves."

After hearing of Leipzig's shock defeat against Ingolstadt, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "We are lucky to have such good neighbours" and promised their fellow Bavarians "a wagon load of Weisswurst and wheat beer" for their favour.
