Robert Lewandowski reveals wife's pregnancy by celebrating goal

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski celebrated news of his wife's pregnancy by scoring the only goal of the game to beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Poland striker curled in a superb free kick past Jan Oblak on 28 minutes as the German champions sealed their 15th successive Champions League home win.

Lewandowski curled the ball delicately over the wall to take his tally to 24 goals in 24 games for club and country this season.

He celebrated the sublime winner, his second free kick in five days following a similar effort against Mainz on Friday in the Bundesliga, by tucking the ball under his shirt and sucking his thumb.

"I've been training free kicks for two or three months now," he said. "I'm really pleased it came off."

Lewandowski then confirmed to reporters after the final whistle that his wife Anna is expecting their first child.

Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti said "everyone at the club is happy for him" and believes the striker will become even more goal hungry when he becomes a father for the first time next year.

"When you have kids you become more motivated and in the future he will be even more motivated," he said.

With the narrow win, Bayern gained a small semblance of revenge for last season's bitter semifinal defeat on away goals against the same opponents.

Ancelotti added at the postmatch news conference: "We played well and controlled the game, with a lot of possession and good balance."

"The result isn't important but the performance will give us confidence for the next games."

Ancelotti also said that he didn't believe finishing second behind Atletico should prove too much of an obstacle to his side's ambitions.

"Our objective was to finish first in the group, but I don't think it will change much," he said. "There isn't much difference between the first and second-placed teams. Now we have to wait for the draw."

Defender Mats Hummels said he was pleased with how Bayern limited Atletico's chances after Lewandowski's goal.

"We only allowed a great opportunity at the beginning, but not many later," he said. "We did a good job, the most important thing is that we have a defensive grasp [on the game]. We had that."
