Carlo Ancelotti to rotate Bayern Munich team to face Atletico Madrid

Jerome Boateng has suffered a fresh injury setback and will miss Bayern Munich's final Champions League Group D game against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, a fixture in which Carlo Ancelotti plans to rotate his starting XI.

Boateng, 28, missed Germany's games during the November international break due to knee and hamstring trouble and has not played since being substituted during Bayern's 3-2 Champions League defeat against FC Rostov on Nov. 23.

"Boateng has slight pain in his shoulder and will not play," Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti said at his prematch news conference.

The final group placings are already decided with Bayern qualifying in second place behind Atleti, but Ancelotti confirmed he will change his side from the one that beat Mainz 3-1 on Friday.

"It's a very important game against one of the best teams in Europe," he said, before adding: "We need to play a high-tempo game, therefore I will select some fresh players."

Arturo Vidal will definitely feature at some stage for the Bavarians. The midfielder hasn't started a Bayern game in a month after being hurt while playing for Chile.

Ancelotti said: "I don't know if he will start, but he's improving all the time. He trained well and it's important that he gets some game time."

The Italian also hailed Thiago's importance to his side, who are looking to extend their home record to 15 Champions League wins in a row.

"He's a very important player who can play in any number of different midfield positions," Ancelotti said. "Very few players possess his quality and flexibility."

The ex-Barcelona midfielder said that last season's semifinal loss to the same opponents was a bitter pill to swallow, but revenge wouldn't be a factor in Tuesday's game.

"Obviously the defeat against Atleti was hard to take," Thiago said. "But that's in the past now, we want to put on a good performance and win the game."
