Bayern Munich not favourably treated over Bundesliga fixtures - Rummenigge

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has refuted claims by Borussia Monchengladbach's director of football Max Eberl that the German champions are favourably treated by the league when arranging Bundesliga fixtures following Champions League games.

Eberl, a former Bayern player, felt that his side were being harshly mistreated by the DFL (German league organisers) for being forced to play a Bundesliga match at Hertha Berlin this Friday -- just three days after facing Celtic on Tuesday in the Champions League.

"I don't know what the league is thinking about by making a Champions League participant play again on a Friday," Eberl said. "It wouldn't happen with Bayern Munich.

"I've never heard about Bayern playing on a Friday after the Champions League. They always play on Saturdays or Sundays."

But Rummenigge countered Eberl's criticism, telling Bild: "We've also had to deal with this," he said.

"Of course you always prefer to play on a Saturday, but then he should complain to the DFL."

Rummenigge added that Eberl "needs to handle it in good time" and that it was "more of a reproach against his own club."

Bayern last played a Bundesliga game on a Friday after a Tuesday Champions League game six years ago in 2010-11, and before that in 1999-00.

Back in 2010, then-DFL chair Heribert Bruchhagen countered Bayern's irritation about having to play two games in quick succession, saying: "Yes it is annoying, but everyone has to do it. Bayern shouldn't cry about it."

Schalke (2010-11), Dortmund (1999-00) and Wolfsburg (2009-10) have all encountered the same issue in the past.

According to the DFL, the game has to be played on a Friday because "a large demonstration is being held in Berlin on Saturday and the security authorities have requested that no football games take place in the two top-tiers of the Bundesliga this weekend."
