Xabi Alonso: UCL win with Bayern Munich would be 'icing on cake'

Xabi Alonso has said he dreams of winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich after lifting the trophy with both Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Bayern last won the competition in 2013-14, before the Alonso left Real to join the Bundesliga giants.

The Munich side reached the semifinals in the last two seasons, losing to eventual champions Barcelona and then to last season's runners-up Atletico Madrid.

Alonso, whose contract with Bayern expires next summer, told Marca: "To win the Champions League with Bayern is a dream for me, a great aim that I hope I can achieve.

"It would be the icing on the cake. For Bayern, it's very important to win it because we know how prestigious this competition is.

"We have a great team, fantastic fans and we are a big club. Our duty is to be in a position to win it, although winning it depends on the day.

"At Real we lost three straight semifinals under [Jose] Mourinho, and then we won the 10th European Cup. When you persevere, you get it. I hope this is our year."

Bayern visit Atletico -- beaten by Real Madrid in two of the last three finals -- in the group stages on Wednesday and will be hoping for revenge after their semifinal defeat last season.

"Atletico have twice been close to winning it," 34-year-old Alonso said. "I think if they continue like this, they are going to have another possibility to win it."

Alonso has been reunited with Carlo Ancelotti, the man who led Real to their 10th European Cup, at Bayern this season.

And the defending Bundesliga champions have shown no sign of being in transition, winning their opening five Bundesliga games and holding a three-point lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top.

"We are happy with our start to the campaign considering the coaching change," Alonso said. "But we are adapting to Ancelotti and vice-versa. We have to keep going."
