Bayern Munich aim to beat Atletico Madrid this time - Arturo Vidal

Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal has vowed "to eradicate the pain" of last season's Champions League semifinal defeat to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Vidal, 29, was part of Pep Guardiola's Bayern side who lost to Atleti five months ago on away goals -- the third straight season that Bayern had succumbed at the semifinal stage to a Spanish side.

An early Saul Niguez strike proved the difference in the Spanish capital in April, as Bayern, despite winning 2-1 in the return leg in Munich, exited the competition on away goals with Thomas Muller also missing a penalty.

"We have to eradicate the pain of that defeat," he said. "We badly wanted to reach the final, but Atletico were more efficient in front of goal. We have plenty to rectify."

Vidal told German magazine Kicker that his main target this season was "to win the Champions League" -- the only major club title to have eluded the combative midfielder in his career so far.

But the Chilean warned against overvaluing Bayern's emphatic start to the campaign with eight wins in a row in all competitions.

"It's all about collecting the three titles [Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, Champions League] at the end of the season," he said.

However, skipper Philipp Lahm tried to play down the revenge factor against Atleti.

"It's the group stage and not the semifinals," he said. "But if we can leave with some points then we will have had a very decent start to our campaign."

Spain international midfielder Thiago also echoed this sentiment.

Meanwhile, Mats Hummels is likely to make the trip to Madrid after resuming training on Monday.

Hummels, 28, picked up a knee injury after a harmless tangle with U.S. international striker Bobby Wood on the stroke of half time in Bayern's last-gasp 1-0 victory in Hamburg on Saturday.

After treatment, Hummels carried on after the break but was replaced by his Germany central defensive partner Jerome Boateng at 51 minutes.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund captain told reporters after the final whistle that there were "no guarantees" that he would be fit to face Madrid. He wasn't able to train with the team on Sunday, only carrying out light knee exercises in the gym.

But the Germany central defender returned to Bayern team training on Monday and is expected to make the trip to Madrid.
