Ancelotti hails 'fantastic' Bayern Munich squad after close loss to Real

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti had mixed feelings after his side fell to a 1-0 defeat in the International Champions Cup against Real Madrid.

Danilo's 79th-minute goal was the difference between the two sides and made Bayern pay for missed chances in the first half, when David Alaba hit the post and Julian Green and Thiago were denied by Kiko Casilla saves.

"In general I am happy because in the first half we played a good team and had very good control of the game," said Ancelotti. "We are in preseason and so have to continue to work and do better than in the second half."

Ancelotti confirmed that Bayern's Euro 2016 contingent will rejoin the squad on Friday ahead of the German Super Cup on Aug. 14 vs. Borussia Dortmund. In their absence, the Bundesliga champions have won four of their six preseason games -- Wednesday's loss was their first defeat -- and the club's new manager is pleased with what he has seen so far.

"I learned I have a really good team," said Ancelotti. "With the players that are coming back I think we will be able to be a really strong team. I have a lot of confidence in my players and I am sure we are going to do a fantastic season."

Among the players yet to join up with Bayern is new signing Renato Sanches. The 18-year-old was a key member of Portugal's European Championship-winning side and his new club manager is looking forward to working with him.

"I think he is a fantastic player; he is really young and we have to take care of this but he has a lot of quality, a lot of potential," said Ancelotti. "He is a good signing for us and I think he will help us to complete a fantastic squad."

U.S. international striker Green was given another start against Madrid. Like his team overall, Ancelotti felt that the 21-year-old, who scored a hat trick last weekend against Inter, began well before fading.

"He has had a good preseason and scored goals; he had an opportunity tonight and played well, as did the team in the first half," said Ancelotti. "The second half was more difficult because we were a bit tired didn't play with the intensity we wanted."
