Bayern Munich open to prolonging Arjen Robben contract

Arjen Robben will be offered a new Bayern Munich contract if he enjoys a successful season, the club's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said.

Robben, 32, has one year left on his contract at Bayern but the winger, who joined the club from Real Madrid in 2009, has yet to be offered an extension.

The Netherlands international had resumed training earlier this month following a four-month injury layoff, but he suffered a groin injury when making his return in a friendly and the club announced he was set to spend around six weeks on the sidelines.

Rummenigge said Robben retains the club's backing but suggested he will only be offered an extension once he has proved his fitness.

"We support him wherever we can," Rummenigge told Sport1. "He knows that he can rely on us. I believe this is the crucial criteria: We are a reliable partner, also in difficult moments, and this is a difficult moment right now.

"We have great trust in each other and my wish for him is that he experiences a season that pleases him and that pleases the club and in which he hopefully only picks up a few injuries. Then nothing speaks against prolonging things beyond 2017."

Robben had said last month: "I don't give thought to a new contract right now. I want to get fit again, and stay healthy after that.

"That's my biggest wish right now. I want to be able to enjoy my football again. That's it."
