Bayern Munich dedicate win over Augsburg to injured Holger Badstuber

Bayern Munich dedicated their 3-1 win over Augsburg on Sunday to the injured Holger Badstuber.

Badstuber, who has made just 17 league appearances since the start of 2013 due to a succession of injuries, was ruled out for three months after breaking his ankle in training on Saturday.

His teammates lined up before their Bavarian derby wearing a shirt bearing his name and number and offering their support as he hits the comeback trail once again, and there were more warm words to come after the final whistle.

"We're very happy to have won this game, above all for Holger," said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, who was forced into fielding a makeshift defence with David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich because of the injury problems at the club.

Captain Philipp Lahm added: "I think we defended really, really well, considering we didn't have a central defender by trade. The situation is very difficult for us with Holger's injury, but sadly it is nothing new. It's a real, real shame."

Even without Badstuber, Javi Martinez, Jerome Boateng, Medhi Benatia and Franck Ribery -- who was named on the bench for the first time since December -- Bayern were in a different league to Augsburg, according to their coach Markus Weinzierl.

"It was a deserved win," he said. "Bayern's world-class individuals made the difference.

"Gaps opened up and Bayern punished us ruthlessly. I'm sure other sides are going to lose to this Bayern side also."

Augsburg's attention now turns to the biggest game in their history against Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday night.

"We've got to look forwards and focus on our next challenge," said captain Paul Verhaegh, who added that there is nothing to be ashamed of in losing to Bayern.

"We know where we need to be collecting our points."
