Matthias Sammer: Bayern Munich title talk before Christmas is 'stupid'

Bayern Munich sporting executive Matthias Sammer has said it is "stupid" to talk about the club winning a fourth consecutive Bundesliga title before Christmas.

With 14 games of the Bundesliga season played, Bayern have an eight-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, with their only dropped points so far having come in a goalless draw at Frankfurt.

A 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday took their tally for this season to 40 points, more than any other side at the stage of the season in Bundesliga history.

But Sammer told reporters on Saturday that he believed the title race was far from over.

Speaking to Sport 1, he said Dortmund, who Bayern beat 5-1 in early October, were a "strong competitor," saying it was "stupid to talk about the question of winning the title before Christmas."

The former Germany international compared the title race to a "marathon" and warned that "you can trip in every metre."

Bayern could seal the Herbstmeisterschaft, the unofficial title for winning the first half of the season, with three points at resurgent Borussia Monchengladbach next week.

Regardless of the result there, they will do so if Dortmund fail to return from Wolfsburg with three points.

Bayern attacker Thomas Muller scored his 13th goal of the season with a header, meaning he has already equalled his previous best total for a season.

But Muller, 26, is only third in the Bundesliga top scorer list -- one goal behind his teammate Robert Lewandowski, who failed to score against Hertha, and four adrift of Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Gabon international Aubameyang scored a brace in Dortmund's 4-1 defeat of VfB Stuttgart on Sunday to take his tally to 17.

That is one more than his previous Bundesliga best, and he has only failed to score in two games this season.
