Xabi Alonso unsure over Bayern Munich future

Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has said he remains uncertain whether he will stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

Alonso, 33, has made an impressive start to his second campaign at the Allianz Arena but, with his contract due to expire next summer, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has left his future open.

"I'm not wasting any thoughts on it at the moment," he told German football magazine kicker. "The end of the season is still far away in the future."

The former Spain international impressed at Bayern after his arrival from Real Madrid last year but struggled to maintain his form towards the end of the campaign as Pep Guardiola's side exited the Champions League and DFB Pokal.

He faced criticism in the German media for his lack of pace, but Guardiola has remained supportive of the player and has selected him in all three of the club's Bundesliga games this season.

Alonso was also pressed into service as a centre-back alongside left-back David Alaba during the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend due to the absence of Medhi Benatia, Jerome Boateng, Holger Badstuber and Javi Martinez.

While Alonso's performance raised questions over his tackling ability -- a quality the player himself has said he does not value -- he attracted praise for his distribution from the back, having played a role in two of his side's goals.

"Tonight, a new centre-back was born," Bayern sporting executive Matthias Sammer told kicker on Saturday. "Alonso has played world-class match."
