Bayern Munich chief Rummenigge angered by media's criticism of club

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes the German media has shown a lack of respect towards the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern won a third consecutive German title this season, although that was overshadowed by defeats in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal semifinals, as well as a string of injuries which led to doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt departing after nearly 40 years at the club.

The German champions also suffered three consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga after wrapping up the title early, leading to several clubs and sections of the media questioning their attitude while claiming it has been a disappointing season for them.

At the official reception prior to celebrating Bayern's 25th German title win with some 15,000 supporters on the Marienplatz on Sunday, Rummenigge said he was surprised by the lack of respect for the club.

"This season was at a least a two-plus [a German grade comparable to a 9/10 in the English system]. We are very happy with the course of the season," Rummenigge said. "Looking at the media, it's like most of them don't know what it means to win the German championship.

"A year ago I was asked what our targets were. I said they were to retain the league title and do well in the other two competitions. Looking at us today, I think we've hit our targets."

During the official team party at the Postpalast, Rummenigge praised the players and coach Pep Guardiola for their achievements this season.

"Seven of our players became world champions last year and 14 took part in the World Cup," he said. "Normally that would leave you dead for a year -- you can't manage the extra yard and your motivation is gone. But what our coach and his team have achieved this year is magnificent. Many, many thanks, dear Pep."
