Bayern Munich's Holger Badstuber to have surgery on thigh muscle

Holger Badstuber has suffered another injury setback. The Bayern Munich defender will undergo surgery after suffering a muscular injury in his left thigh during the 6-1 win against Porto on Tuesday, his club announced.

Badstuber, who is set for up to four months on the sidelines, said that he was "disappointed at the moment," but vowed to come back again.

"Despite it all I'm remaining positive and I'll be back again fully fit. I know everything will be done for me at FC Bayern so I can come back as an important part of the team," he was quoted on the official club website.

"We're so sorry for Holger. He worked so hard towards his latest comeback -- and now this," Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Badstuber had only just fought his way back into the Bayern Munich team, and also returned to the Germany national team during the 2-2 draw with Australia last month. However, he missed the following qualifier in Georgia with a minor injury, which also ruled him out for the Bundesliga match at Dortmund.

"We've come to know and value Holger as a fighter," Rummenigge said. "He'll never allow himself to become discouraged even by this new injury. He knows how important he is to us. That will spur him on during the sports rehabilitation phase and help him recover fitness as quickly as possible,"

The 26-year-old is to undergo surgery in Vail, Colorado, where he has also already been treated during his 17 months lay-off following an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in early December 2013. Three games into his comeback earlier this season, Badstuber suffered a tendon tear, which ruled him out until February.

He has played a total of 16 competitive games this season, and provided the assist for Jerome Boateng's 2-0 against Porto on Tuesday.
