Bayern Munich 'screwed up' against Porto - Manuel Neuer

Bayern Munich "screwed up" in their 3-1 defeat at Porto in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg, according to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

With only 10 minutes played at the Estadio do Dragao, Bayern had already conceded two goals, both scored by Ricardo Quaresma.

Quaresma struck his after only three minutes, when he converted a penalty after a foul by Neuer, while the second came from a mistake by Dante.

"We just screwed up," Neuer told reporters after the match. "It's not gone the way we wanted it to. We weren't as confident in our passing and we hardly created any chances. That was the one problem, and the other was the mistakes we made."

"We knew it wouldn't be easy," attacker Thomas Muller, who struggled to make an impact, said. "But after the start it was a match which began with being 2-0 down. And usually the result reflects the performance."

However, the Germany international added that advancing to the semifinals is still possible. "We are still FC Bayern, and a strong team at home. We'll give it our all next Tuesday. It would not be a miracle to take a 2-0 win at home."

Sporting director Matthias Sammer said: "We should not lose our cool," adding that becoming a great team also means "to be able to put these things behind you," and "losing our cool" could be fatal.

"We now have to score at least twice at home. We're full of optimism. We'll need a top performance -- and we're capable of one."

Speaking at Bayern's traditional postmatch meal, CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge cited the ongoing injury crisis as one of the reasons for the defeat.

"I am not willing to criticise this team. We only have 13, 14 healthy players right now, and they have been playing three games a week for weeks now," he said, adding that he's full of confidence that "this outstanding team with this outstanding coach" can overcome the deficit in the return leg at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said that while the 3-1 defeat against a "physically strong team" might be "a complicated result", the team and the fans at the Allianz "won't give up easily" next Tuesday.
