Arjen Robben to miss several weeks with torn abdominal muscle

Arjen Robben is set to miss several weeks of action. The Bayern Munich winger tore an abdominal muscle in his club's 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

The Netherlands international was withdrawn 24 minutes into Bayern's first home defeat of the season following a foul by Gladbach's Tony Jantschke. The 31-year-old had only returned after a minor back injury suffered in the 7-0 Champions League victory over Shakthar Donetsk.

"Bad news: Arjen #Robben has torn an abdominal muscle and will be out for several weeks," Bayern Munich announced on Twitter following the 2-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena, their first at home since the 3-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on match day 30 in the 2013/2014 season.

Arjen Robben has scored 19 goals in 29 games in all competitions, and has set up a further 10. The Netherlands international has so far been one of the star players of the Bundesliga season.

Bayern Munich will travel to Dortmund's Westfalenstadion when the league resumes after the international break, and will then face Bayer Leverkusen at the Bay-Arena in the German Cup.

After another league match against Eintracht Frankfurt, they travel to Porto for the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal on April 15.

Despite the defeat on Sunday, Bayern Munich still hold a 10-point lead over VfL Wolfsburg with 24 points still left to play for in the Bundesliga.

The winger's absence leaves Netherlands coach Guus Hiddink missing two of his most experienced and most effective strikers against Turkey. Captain and the Netherlands' all-time international top scorer Robin van Persie is also out through injury, along with centre-back Ron Vlaar.

Robben had been due to gather with the rest of the Netherlands team on Monday, but told Hiddink he could not make the trip.

Hiddink called up Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes as a replacement.

The Netherlands, third in Euro 2016 qualifying Group A after four matches, take on fourth-placed Turkey on Saturday at the Amsterdam Arena and meet Spain three days later at the same venue.
