Pep Guardiola says Bayern Munich are 'back in the groove'

Pep Guardiola says Bayern Munich are "back in the groove" after putting eight goals past Hamburg on Saturday.

Bayern struggled to start the second half of the Bundesliga season, returning from the long winter break with a 4-1 defeat at Wolfsburg and a 1-1 draw at home against Schalke.

But a win away to Stuttgart followed last weekend, and Saturday's 8-0 thrashing of Hamburg saw Bayern return to the form from their unbeaten first half, when they won all but three games.

Guardiola said his side's improvement was noticeable.

"We played well and our build-up play was better than it has been recently," the manager told Bayern's official website. "I'm happy because we're back in the groove."

Bastian Schweinsteiger said he was pleased with the squad's efforts.

"You obviously enjoy it when you play like we did today," the midfielder said. "We worked hard, kept it simple and moved well. We talked a lot out there on the pitch and that also makes life easier. Our build-up play was much improved compared to recent weeks and our attacks were better."

Hamburg coach Joe Zinnbauer said his side could have no complaints about the lopsided scoreline.

"I'll not forget this day for the rest of my life. There's not a lot to discuss when you've lost 8-0," he said. "We have to apologise to our fans because 8-0 is unbelievable, although we did meet incredibly strong opponents today. The margin of victory is the right one."

Bayern maintained their eight-point lead in the Bundesliga over Wolfsburg, though attention now shifts to the Champions League, with a trip to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the first Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday.

"We'll turn our focus to the Champions League now," Guradiola said. "Xabi Alonso had a minor problem with a sprain and we didn't want to take any risks."

Robert Lewandowski scored the sixth of Bayern's goals on Saturday, but he said he expects a new challenge in midweek.

"8-0 and a great performance! It's always good when you score lots of goals," he said. "It'll obviously be a completely different game on Tuesday, but we're up for it. I'm delighted we played so well."
