Bastian Schweinsteiger elated after Bayern Munich return

Bastian Schweinsteiger expressed his delight after making his long-awaited return to action during Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory against Hoffenheim.

Germany captain Schweinsteiger had not featured in a competitive game since the World Cup final 132 days earlier as a result of knee problems, and it had been feared he would not return before the winter break.

However, the 30-year-old came on to a standing ovation in the 77th minute at the Allianz Arena on Saturday and swiftly provided an assist for Sebastian Rode.

"It was very emotional to get a reception like that from the supporters. You never forget moments like that," the midfielder told reporters after the victory, which saw Bayern increase their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to seven points.

He added: "I always thought I would make it. I had to be very patient, but the club gave me plenty of time. That made it easier for me. But I am not where I want to be as yet. It will get better and better."

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola said that, while Schweinsteiger is not at 100 percent yet, he would help the team, adding: "We have a super new midfielder."

Arjen Robben said he got goosebumps during Schweinsteiger's introduction, adding: "That was a huge moment for him and all of us. The 'Fussball-Gott' [Football God] is back."

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said: "The fans have been desperately waiting for this moment. You could feel that during the warm-up."

Meanwhile, Bayern centre-back Jerome Boateng has said he has no reason to leave the Bundesliga champions.

The Germany international is still under contract until 2018, and the 26-year-old told Bild: "I can see myself ending my career at Bayern, but I don't want to promise anything.

"I owe a lot to Bayern and I feel just great here. Right now I can't imagine playing somewhere else. This is one of the best clubs in the world."
