Bayern Munich's Philipp Lahm has successful operation on broken ankle

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has undergone successful surgery on a broken ankle.

Lahm, 31, was driven away from the club's training ground on a cart on Tuesday after going over on his right ankle while training with the Bundesliga champions.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Two days after Philipp Lahm sustained a broken right ankle on the training ground, the FCB captain successfully underwent surgery on Thursday morning.

"The fracture was repaired and fixed using a surgical plate and screw. Lahm will spend the next few days in hospital and has been ordered to rest his right leg for several weeks before starting a sports rehab programme.

"The club and all its fans send best wishes for a speedy recovery.''

The former Germany captain is set to miss three months of action, while Bayern teammate Franck Ribery says Lahm's injury is a big loss for the Bundesliga champions.

"It hurt me to see him lying on the pitch. I am just sad for him," Ribery told Bild. "Every player and every Bayern employee feels sorry for him. We have lost a very important player.

"He has always played well, has always been in top shape, and has always been a good captain. He's got an unbelievable presence on the pitch, but also in the dressing room. And we will miss that. We lose a very important player.

"He needs to stay calm now, keep his chin up somehow, even if that might not be easy. He needs support from his family, and from us. We are also his family and will help him where we can. We are there for Philipp."
