Matthias Sammer signs new deal to nurture Bayern's next generation

Bayern Munich sporting executive Matthias Sammer will be tasked with nurturing the next generation of players after signing a new contract with the club.

Sammer has penned a deal with the German champions which will run through to the summer of 2018, having replaced Christian Nerlinger in the role two years ago.

"I promise to carry on my work with the same levels of passion and intensity as before," Sammer was quoted as saying in the official press release. "We're all aiming to achieve a lot at FC Bayern. I want to play my part in achieving our targets."

Sammer's position at the Allianz Arena has at times been questioned by the media, and also officials from other clubs. The most striking article was published in May 2013, when German weekly Die Zeit headlined: "Matthias Sammer -- The man without a task."

In the summer of 2014, Bayern appointed Michael Reschke as their new technical director to support Sammer on "player contracts, junior teams, scouting and transfers."

While that appointment was questioned too in some quarters, Reschke enabled Sammer to "concentrate on the development of the pro team, as well as the youth department" in a more strategic role, as German football magazine kicker commented on Wednesday.

It means Sammer can concentate fully on the direction of the club, and building the future, while Reschke handles contract talks.

And in the coming years, they will need to replace the ageing stars like Bastian Schweinsteiger, 30, Arjen Robben, 30, Philipp Lahm, 31, and Franck Ribery, 31.

But they will also need to continue developing what kicker called, "Bayern's next generation." "We've won eight titles with him in the first two years. That's four a year. So if you add this year, and those three to follow after that, we have four. Four times four makes 16, and then you know what vision is expected. Pressure never hurts," Bayern president Karl Hopfner joked at the news conference on Wednesday about what is expected of Sammer.
