Former Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller training with Bayern Munich

Former Mainz and Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller is training with Bayern Munich, and could be handed a short term contract to cover for the injured Pepe Reina and Tom Starke.

Both Reina, 32, and Tom, 33 -- the two backups to first-choice Manuel Neuer -- suffered injuries in recent weeks and both are unlikely to return to action this year. The former is set to miss at least six more weeks with a severe muscle injury in his left calf, while the latter will not return in 2014 because of an ankle injury.

Youngster Leopold Zingerle, 20, is currently warming the bench at the Allianz Arena having been promoted from the reserves, but the club could be looking toward a more experience option as Muller trained with the side on Monday.

Muller was not awarded a new contract at Mainz for the new season, and confirmed in Bild that he "is an intern," but "can't say more just now."

"It's a good thing, and I'm just happy to be in training here, everything else will show," Muller added. According to the paper, Muller will keep on training at Bayern, and could get a contract if either Neuer or Zingerle suffer an injury in the upcoming weeks.

Elsewhere, Netherlands winger Arjen Robben returned to training on Monday, Bild reported. The 30-year-old missed Sunday's top match at Monchengladbach with a thigh problem, but looked very sharp in training.

The winger, who was severely missed in the 0-0 draw at Gladbach, could return to the Bayern squad in the DfB-Pokal match against Hamburg on Wednesday.
