Supporters at Bayer Leverkusen-Union Berlin in total silence after fan emergency

A supporter was escorted out on a stretcher 17 minutes into Bayer Leverkusen's 3-1 German Cup quarterfinal win over Union Berlin on Wednesday, leading to an eerie silence inside the ground.

The match started with a raucous atmosphere as both sides battled for the right to make it through to the last four.

However, following the medical emergency, there was complete silence, even when Union Berlin took a 1-0 lead through Marcus Ingvartsen on 39 minutes.

Both teams tweeted their best wishes to the injured supporter shortly after the incident.

On 41 minutes, the medics returned to rapturous applause from the supporters and, after receiving a signal confirming the injured person in question was OK, both sets of fans began to chant as normal.

It was later announced the supporter was conscious and on the way to a local hospital.

Union appeared set for an unlikely semifinal appearance until Christopher Lenz's 71st-minute red card for the visitors saw the tie unravel.

Karim Bellarabi equalised for the home side just a minute later before Charles Aranguiz put Leverkusen ahead four minutes from time. Moussa Diaby made the victory secure in stoppage time.

In other German Cup action, holders Bayern Munich cemented their semifinal place  thanks to a 1-0 victory over Schalke on Tuesday, while Saarbrucken's goalkeeper saved five penalties as the fourth-tier side shocked Fortuna Dusseldorf.

On Wednesday, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Werder Bremen 2-0.
