Javier Hernandez 'important' for Leverkusen - Roger Schmidt

Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt is happy to have Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez back in top form as his side prepares for their Champions League Group E clash with Monaco on Tuesday.

The Mexico international scored 26 goals in all competitions for Leverkusen last season after playing bit roles for Manchester United and Real Madrid the past few years.

Chicharito missed the start of the 2016-17 campaign after breaking his hand after a fall in his home. However the 28-year-old striker has been back to his best recently, and scored a hat trick in Leverkusen's 3-2 defeat of Mainz at the weekend.

"Javier Hernandez is a very important player for us because he scores goals," Schmidt told a news conference on Monday.

"Not only that, he also works hard for the team.

"At the start of the season he had a broken hand, which held him back. Now he's scoring goals and we're very happy for him."

Chicharito has scored five goals in six games over all competitions for Leverkusen this season.
