Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez nears Bayer Leverkusen return

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez is set for his return from injury when Bayer Leverkusen host Hamburg on Saturday.

The Mexico international broke his hand in a fall just over a fortnight ago.

Hernandez, 28, resumed team training this week following his injury which required surgery. Hernandez initially was confident to return to the Bayer team following the international break.

His coach Roger Schmidt, however, raised doubts when saying that due to the complicated surgery it was "not safe to say that he'll be back for Hamburg" or the Champions League match in Moscow next week.

Speaking to reporters at his prematch news conference, Schmidt confirmed that the former Manchester United striker will return to the squad when Leverkusen host Hamburg in Bundesliga on Saturday.

"Chicharito was able to complete the training sessions. I'd like to think he can play," Schmidt said. Leverkusen will most likely be without Germany international Kevin Volland, 24, who broke his hand in Germany's friendly victory over Finland just over a week ago.

The Bundesliga side on Thursday also announced that Vladlen Yurchenko, 22, is set for four to six-week spell on the sidelines. The midfielder sustained a hairline fracture to the left fibula while with the Ukraine national team during the recent international break.

Leverkusen suffered a 2-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach on the opening weekend of Bundesliga a fortnight ago.
