Javier Hernandez a unique player - Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt has hailed Mexico international Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez as "a special kind of player."

Hernandez, 27, has scored 16 goals in 25 league games for Leverkusen this season, and added a further nine in 12 matches in the European competitions and the German Cup.

Schmidt is delighted with the results of the striker's transfer to the club from Manchester United on a three-year deal this summer, although did not rule out that he could leave the Bay-Arena.

"There are not many like him. He's unique in the way he plays," Schmidt told kicker. "He's a special kind of player, whose qualities might not extremely stand out but who has the gift to make the right moves, especially when it comes to scoring goals.

"It was an extraordinary step to join Bayer Leverkusen from Manchester United. And it has extremely paid off for both sides.

"That's why I hope he will stay. But he's a special case. You will have to wait and see what time brings and also in which direction he thinks."

Following a crisis earlier in 2016, Leverkusen are back on track to return to Champions League next season as they sit in third sport, two points ahead of Hertha Berlin, with only four matches left to be played.

Hernandez has so far remained coy on his long-term future with Leverkusen and said earlier this week: "My future doesn't only hinge on me. I live in the here and now. You can plan everything in life, but sometimes life plans for you. The club, which owns you, decides whether it still needs you or wants to sell you. It's just like that in [the] football business."
