Roger Schmidt not leaving Bayer Leverkusen despite exit reports

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt has vowed to stay at the Bundesliga club, amid reports linking him to RB Leipzig.

Leverkusen have been one of the many Bundesliga sides struggling for consistency this season and currently sit sixth in the table after picking up only one point from four games between late February and early March.

They also crashed out of the DFB Pokal at home to strugglers Werder Bremen, were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, before failing to advance any further than the Europa League's round of 16, where they were eliminated by Villarreal.

The 49-year-old has been linked with a return to working for soft-drink giants Red Bull, with reports claiming he is set for German second-tier side RB Leipzig, having previously managed RB Salzburg before taking charge of Leverkusen in 2014.

However, speaking to reporters prior to Friday's match against Wolfsburg, Schmidt vowed to stay on at Leverkusen next season.

"One year ago, with great conviction I prolonged my contract until 2019 because I feel at the right place here," Schmidt said. "I feel the trust of the decision makers. Even though we've had to go through difficult spells this season, and are still going through them, I believe that we are on a very good path.

"That's why those stories and rumours don't affect me. I feel great at Bayern Leverkusen, and I am looking forward to the next years."

Leverkusen host Champions League quarterfinalists Wolfsburg on Friday in what has been labelled "El Plastico" by the German media.

The visitors are currently ranked eighth in the Bundesliga, and need three points to keep their hopes of returning to Europe's biggest club competition alive.
