Barnsley name Jose Mourinho's former assistant Jose Morais as manager

Barnsley have appointed Jose Morais, who worked under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea, as their new manager.

Morais, 52, succeeds Paul Heckingbottom, after he left to take over at Leeds earlier this month.

He had worked with Mourinho since 2009, before which he had a nomadic coaching career in Europe, North Africa and Asia.

After leaving Chelsea along with Mourinho in 2016, Morais has had spells managing Antalyaspor in Turkey and AEK Athens in Greece.

Chief executive Gauthier Ganaye told the club's official website: "We're really, really pleased to have secured the club's No. 1 target from the start of the process.

"The interviewed candidates were all strong contenders, but the unanimous decision was to appoint Jose who instilled the full board with the belief that he is the right man to lead us up the table, whilst bringing excitement back to the club with an attacking style and goals for the fans to enjoy.

"We now look ahead to a vital part of the season under Jose's leadership. He is excited about taking training straight away and installing his own vision on the squad, which in turn has excited the Club and its staff about the remainder of the campaign. We fully believe this is the right appointment at the right time."

Former Portugal international Dimas also joined the club as Morais' assistant.

Barnsley announced that the 49-year-old former Benfica, Juventus and Marseille player had joined the Reds on an 18-month contract.

Barnsley occupy the final relegation place in the Championship, but sit just one point behind Hull City in 21st.
