Man United's Memphis Depay could be world's best winger - Kanchelskis

Memphis Depay has the potential to be the best winger in the world, according to former Manchester United player Andrei Kanchelskis.

Depay, 21, joined United from PSV Eindhoven in the 2015 summer window for a reported £25 million fee, but the Dutch striker has struggled to make his mark with the first team at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has failed to live up to his price tag so far though, scoring just five times in 28 appearances in all competitions for Louis van Gaal's side, after leading the Eredivisie in scoring during the 2014-15 campaign with 22 goals.

Kanchelskis, a two-time Premier League title winner with United during his four-year spell there, believes all the physical tools and skills are there to help Depay become one of the world's best players.

"He [Depay] is a very good player," Kanchelskis told 888Sport.com. "He's a skilful winger with good crossing ability and a great change of pace.

"He has the potential to become the best winger in the world."

The former Soviet Union and Russian national team player also had an opinion on United's other big-money addition from last summer, £58m signing Anthony Martial.

Kanchelskis said that, despite the 20-year-old's success at Old Trafford, he thinks Martial's natural position is in the centre of the field, not playing in the wider role he's operated in thus far for Van Gaal.

"Martial is no out and out winger like Ryan Giggs was in his early days. His best position is attacking down the middle, that is where his future will be," Kanchelskis added.
