Jurgen Klopp: Adam Bogdan deserved free kick in Liverpool loss at Watford

Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool goalkeeper Adam Bogdan should have been awarded a free kick following his howler in Sunday's 3-0 Premier League defeat at Watford, but admits his team made "wrong decisions."

An injury to No. 1 Simon Mignolet saw Bogdan start, but the 28-year-old shot-stopper suffered a nightmare display, dropping the ball twice at a corner for Nathan Ake to finish after three minutes despite the keeper protesting that the Hornets defender kicked the ball out of his hands.

In-form striker Odion Ighalo scored either side of the interval to cap a terrible day for Liverpool, and though Klopp admits his side's reaction to Ake's opener was poor, he insists referee Mark Clattenburg should have awarded Bogdan a free kick in the buildup to Ake's opener.

"It was a bad start to the game," he told Sky Sports. "Of course the first ball from Adam Bogdan, he should keep and he drops it. Having seen it again usually it is a foul but it is 1-0 and our reaction was really bad.

"We lost our mind and stopped playing football. The second goal was very easy, we can defend this better. We tried a bit in the first half and changed a bit half-time, the start to the second half was very good, we could have scored two goals, but we didn't and then the third goal. Yeah, game over.

"The first one is his [Bogdan] fault, but then both hands on the ball, that is the goalkeeper safe, he has the ball, I think the referee didn't see it. It was the wrong decision but we made more wrong decisions."

Bogdan told BBC Sport: "It was a wrong time to concede. I dropped the first ball which is a mistake, I hold my hands up, but I felt I recovered the ball and he kicked it out of my hands. But if I catch the first one it's not a goal.

"I had both hands on the ball but we are talking about a split-second. It's not easy for the referee to see. If I catch the first ball there is no second one.

"Something went wrong, I have to think about it again. It was a mistake and I will learn from it. I felt good, it wasn't nerves. I trained hard for this chance and it started as a nightmare. I don't blame the referee or anyone else, I go back to train and work hard."

With Dejan Lovren already on the sidelines, Liverpool's defensive injury woes continued with Martin Skrtel forced off after 40 minutes after landing awkwardly on his back earlier on.

Klopp said of the centre-back: "Martin Skrtel is injured now, that is a problem I don't know who will come back in this moment. Nobody had a rest, now we have to look who is available for Boxing Day."
