Tottenham's Dele Alli not signing for Liverpool disappointed Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard was disappointed that his former club Liverpool did not sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli.

Alli, 19, agreed to join Tottenham at the beginning of the year from MK Dons, where he spent the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

This campaign he has made 12 Premier League appearances for Spurs, scoring twice, with his form earning him his first caps for England.

Liverpool had been linked with Alli, whose box-to-box playing style has been likened to Gerrard's in his prime, but instead moved to White Hart Lane in a £5 million deal.

The London Evening Standard quotes LA Galaxy midfielder Gerrard as telling BT Sport: "He looks ahead of me as far as England games and appearances are concerned.

"He's got more experience because he came through at MK Dons which has helped him progress and make the impact he has done at Tottenham.

"I was actually disappointed Liverpool didn't sign him. I thought he was certainly a player Liverpool might've tried to go for, especially with me coming to the end.

"He's certainly a player that could play for Liverpool for 15 years, he's got that ability."

Alli is suspended for Sunday's home clash against London rivals Chelsea after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend's 4-1 win over West Ham.
