David Wagner to snub Liverpool, Klopp reunion for Huddersfield role - sources

Liverpool coaching target David Wagner has emerged as the surprise leading contender for the vacant manager's job at Huddersfield Town, sources have told ESPN FC.

Wagner, 44, has been linked with a move to Liverpool to be reunited with Jurgen Klopp after announcing his departure from Borussia Dortmund's under-23s coach on Monday.

The former U.S. international spent four years working together with Klopp, and the new Liverpool boss was keen to have his close friend join him as part of his backroom team at Anfield.

However, Wagner is ready to snub Klopp's overtures and take his first steps into management at Championship club Huddersfield.

Huddersfield are searching for a new manager following the sacking of Chris Powell on Wednesday after 14 months in charge at the club.

Huddersfield chief executive Nigel Clibbens said after the sacking of Powell that the club were planning "a change of direction by the club and a new approach," and it appears Wagner fits those criteria.

The former striker is highly regarded in coaching circles for the work he did at Dortmund and previous club Hoffenheim in developing young players, and a number of Bundesliga side have also expressed an interest in acquiring his services.
