Jonny Evans to benefit from leaving Man United for West Brom - O'Neill

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill believes that Jonny Evans is in a better place mentally after leaving Manchester United and thinks he is delighted to be sold.

The centre-back completed a £6 million move to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, ending a United career that brought 198 appearances over eight seasons in the first-team squad.

But the 27-year-old's opportunities have been limited recently and he has not been in the matchday squad so far this season after manager Louis van Gaal decided he was surplus to requirements.

Evans only made one appearance for United after he was given a six-game ban for spitting at Newcastle's Papiss Cisse in March and as Van Gaal decided he preferred to pick Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Now O'Neill said he is pleased to have his future resolved, telling national newspapers: "He's delighted that it's been resolved. He's had no real experience of West Brom yet, he's not been in the door and he hasn't trained or anything like that. But I think he's just glad that it was eventually settled."

Evans is set to make his first competitive appearance of the season in Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifier against the Faroe Islands on Friday.

He also represented his country in March's win over Finland and June's draw with Romania, despite having played little football for United before either game.

"People made a lot of his club situation," O'Neill added. "It wasn't ideal, not playing football. I look back at the game against Finland and even more so the game against Romania where I thought he was outstanding.

"He came in and played in those games off the back of difficult situations because he had injury problems and he hadn't been playing at Manchester United because of suspension problems.

"I think he's in a better place now before leading into those games, and he still gave us two outstanding performances so I have no concerns with him at all."
