Javier Hernandez bids farewell to Man United fans after Leverkusen move

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United fans, but not Louis van Gaal, after completing his move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Chicharito, 27, signed a three-year deal with the Bundesliga club on Monday for a reported fee of £8.75 million.

United manager Van Gaal had signalled that the Mexico international would be one of his strikers for the season, but that changed when the former Premier League champions moved to sign French forward Anthony Martial from Monaco for £36m.

Chicharito took to Instagram to say goodbye to the Old Trafford club, posting a picture with the accompanying caption: "I want to thank Sir Alex Ferguson and Jim Lawlor [chief scout], the club staff, all the players I played with.

"But especially I want to thank all the Manchester United fans in the UK and all around the world for the incredible support I've had this past four years and all the best wishes they have for me in my new chapter!!"

The forward spent the majority of the 2014-15 season on loan at Real Madrid, and has taken the opportunity to seek a regular role in the Bundesliga.

Chicharito made his Leverkusen debut in a friendly match against second-tier club Paderborn on Tuesday, just two days and two training sessions after leaving United.

He played for 72 minutes and wasted a good chance after only three minutes as Leverkusen lost 2-0, but called for more time to adjust.

"The others need to get to know my style of play, and I theirs," he told reporters after the match. "I am very happy. I played the first minutes for my team, and it helps me to find my rhythm."

Chicharito will take part in Mexico's meeting with Argentina early next week, and could then make his Bundesliga debut against Darmstadt in nine days.

"I am looking forward, and I am very optimistic. I am highly motivated," he added.

The striker had earlier said of his decision to join Leverkusen: "I want to go back to feeling important and happy. I want to find happiness.

"Bayer made me feel important and loved and coming here was not a difficult decision to make. They made me feel wanted."
