Chelsea draw Swansea thriller, Man Utd beat Spurs, Watford hold Everton

Chelsea began their Premier League title defence with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Swansea, as Thibaut Courtois was sent off and will now miss the crunch clash with Manchester City.

A free kick out wide saw Oscar curl the ball into the area and it evaded everyone, including goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, to put Chelsea ahead.

Swansea rallied and came back into the game as Jefferson Montero got away and swung in a wonderful cross; Gomis headed it back across goal but Courtois parried only for Andre Ayew to control and slot home past the despairing John Terry.

The scores were level for less than a few minutes though, as Willian's shot from a tight angle looped over Fabianski and into the far corner to make it 2-1 at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, the game turned on its head. A long ball over the top saw Gomis onside -- with Willian playing him on -- and Courtois rushed out of his goal to bring down the Frenchman. The referee adjudged the foul had taken place in the box and the Belgian goalkeeper was sent off and a penalty awarded.

Gomis picked himself up and slotted past Asmir Begovic to make it 2-2, with Oscar taken off and the Blues down to 10 men.

Manchester United began their Premier League season with a nervy 1-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

United started slowly and Christian Eriksen almost put Spurs ahead inside five minutes when he broke through but chipped his effort over new goalkeeper Sergio Romero -- starting in place of the dropped David De Gea -- and also over the bar.

But, despite having the better of the opening exchanges, Spurs fell behind soon after as Ashley Young scampered free to cross for Wayne Rooney and the backtracking Kyle Walker diverted the ball into his own net.

Romero was forced into making two saves in the final few minutes, one from a deflected Kane header, the other from a powerful shot by Eriksen moments later, but United held on for all three points.

Newly-promoted Watford held Everton to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in their first game back in the top flight.

Watford took the lead as Mexico's Miguel Layun smashed the ball home past Tim Howard to put the Hornets 1-0 ahead after getting on the end of a cross from the left.

Ross Barkley smashed a wonder strike to level the scores in the second half, but Watford showed real guts to push themselves back ahead again as Odion Ighalo hammered his own effort home shortly after.

However, Arouna Kone popped up in the 86th minute to deny Watford and claim a point for the Toffees.

Leicester came out of the blocks quickly and went three goals up against Sunderland inside 25 minutes, as they came away with all three points in a 4-2 win.

Jamie Vardy headed home a Mark Albrighton cross in the 11th minute and they went up 2-0 with another header, as Riyad Mahrez glanced an effort home.

Mahrez then won and scored a penalty to continue his fine form from last season before Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole was substituted shortly after. In the second half, Mahrez hammered a shot again the post and Jermain Defoe's neat finish pulled one back but Albrighton struck to extend the lead once more.

However, the scoring wasn't done as Steven Fletcher rose to get it back to 4-2 but Sunderland could not get themselves back in the game.

Crystal Palace started their season with a fine 3-1 win over newly-promoted Norwich City.

Palace went ahead through Wilfried Zaha who netted from close range after good work on the flanks from Jason Puncheon. The lead was doubled in the second half as Damien Delaney stabbed home after the ball was headed back across goal.

Nathan Redmond got one back and then Norwich thought they had got the equaliser from Cameron Jerome, but the goal was chalked off for a raised foot and Yohan Cabaye struck a late goal to put the seal on the win.

Bournemouth could not claim a win on their first game in the Premier League, as they went down 1-0 to Aston Villa.

Brad Guzan was in fine form as the Villa goalkeeper kept Bournemouth out and new-boy Rudy Gestede met Ashley Westwood's corner with a fine header to seal the points.
