Manchester United at Aston Villa changed to a Friday night kickoff

Manchester United's trip to Aston Villa in the 2015-16 Premier League season has been moved to a Friday night kickoff because of a protest planned by the English Defence League (EDL).

United had been due to play Villa on the weekend of Aug. 15/16 but the match has been brought forward to Aug. 14.

Friday has been selected as the proposed Saturday evening kickoff was declined by West Midlands Police because of a clash with a planned EDL march, and United's potential involvement in a Champions League game the following Tuesday ruled out Sunday.

Friday night kickoffs will become the norm in the 2016-17 campaign as part of the new multi-billion pound broadcasting deal.

The Premier League said in a statement: "The second match-round of the 2015-16 Barclays Premier League season includes Aston Villa vs. Manchester United scheduled for live broadcast on Sky Sports at 7:45 p.m. on Friday Aug. 14, 2015.

"A Saturday 5:30 p.m. kickoff was initially suggested for this match and West Midlands Police confirmed that, under normal circumstances, that would be acceptable. However, due to a planned English Defence League march that will take place in the region on Saturday Aug. 15, and will require police resource, they requested that the Premier League consider avoiding scheduling the match on that date.

"Manchester United's participation in the UEFA Champions League, and a potential European match the following Tuesday, means that a Sunday slot could not be scheduled with any certainty."
