Liverpool approach England U19s coach Sean O'Driscoll for assistant role

Liverpool are hoping to appoint England Under-19 head coach Sean O'Driscoll as their new assistant manager, sources have told ESPN FC.

O'Driscoll, who turns 58 on Wednesday, is expected to leave his current role to join manager Brendan Rodgers' staff at Anfield.

Liverpool have been looking for a new assistant manager since Colin Pascoe was sacked on June 6, following an end-of-season review by American owners Fenway Sports Group.

They have turned to O'Driscoll, who has only been in charge of England's Under-19 side for nine months.

The club are seeking to confirm the appointment before they fly out to Thailand on July 12 to begin a pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

O'Driscoll has never coached in the Premier League, but has plenty of experience in the Championship, where he managed Doncaster, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Throughout his managerial career, he has developed a reputation for producing teams who play attractive football.

Rodgers has stated his admiration for O'Driscoll's methods in the past, stating in 2013 that he was "one of the best coaches I have ever come across."

The former Fulham, Bournemouth and Republic of Ireland midfielder was interviewed for the manager's position at Burnley, then a Premier League club, in January 2010 -- but the job went to Brian Laws instead.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are likely to confirm the £12.5 million signing of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old England right-back underwent a medical on Merseyside on Monday.
