Premier League clubs give least minutes to under-21 players - study

Premier League teams used the smallest percentage of players under age 21 among Europe's five biggest leagues this season, according to a study.

The CIES Football Observatory found that players born in 1994 or later played only 5.3 percent of minutes in England's top flight in 2014-15.

France's Ligue 1 topped the chart at 12.1 percent of minutes, followed by Spain's La Liga at 8.0 percent, Germany's Bundesliga at 7.8 percent and Italy's Serie A at 5.5 percent.

Of all clubs in the study, Monaco gave the most time to under-21s -- more than a third of all minutes at 34.6 percent.

Monaco were followed by Valencia (25.5 percent), Empoli (23.3 percent), Bayer Leverkusen (23.1 percent) and Liverpool (19.8 percent).

Young players took up less than 2 percent of the minutes at 27 of the 98 clubs studied, including at Champions League finalists Barcelona (1.6 percent) and Juventus (1.5 percent).

The minutes for young players across all five leagues is down slightly from 10 years ago, from 8.5 to 7.7 percent.

Since that time, Borussia Dortmund's 2009-10 squad provided the most minutes to under-21s at 36.5 percent, followed by Manchester City's 2007-08 squad at 35 percent, and Monaco this season.
