Why Aaron Ramsey makes the list

The game-breaker. Ramsey hasn't quite replicated his sensational form of early 2013-14, and his goal return in this campaign isn't quite as good as last season at one every four rather than one in every three, but his effect on Arsenal's play remains constant. The Welsh midfielder is so effective because of the way he so distinctively breaks through the lines with his runs. It also has a multiplying effect because of what it means for the team. The likes of Alexis Sanchez can then run off Ramsey, while there is even more scope for Mesut Ozil's true balls.

Part of the reason that Ramsey has not been quite as productive this season is because of his valuable versatility, as he has played defensive midfield more. There is still a considerable argument that he is one of the three most purely talented players in the Arsenal squad alongside Ozil and Sanchez. He is undeniably one of the most exciting, and makes his team so much more exciting when he is used in his best role.

The stats that tell the story

- Led Arsenal and ranked third in the Premier League with 86 touches per 90 minutes this season (minimum 10 games). Also led Arsenal and ranked seventh in the league with 60 passes completed per 90 minutes (also minimum 10 games).
- 16 goals in 52 games the last two league seasons, after seven goals in his first 104 league games for Arsenal.

What the experts say

"Compared to last season, his displays have dipped but crucially, the midfielder remains confident of his ability in front of goal." - WhoScored.com

"... when Ramsey is on top of his game, Arsenal are too. His prolific early-season form in 2014-15 propelled them to the top of the table before injuries and loss of form complicated matters. It's little coincidence." - Nick Ames

"The timing of his runs and his finishing ability mean he offers a perennial threat in the penalty area ..." - James McNicholas
