Sol Campbell warns PFA: Do not 'destroy' Raheem Sterling

Liverpool star Raheem Sterling must be protected by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), according to former England defender Sol Campbell.

Sterling, 20, has found himself in the headlines recently after being snapped by the media inhaling nitrous oxide amid an ongoing saga over his new contract at Anfield.

The winger turned down an £100,000-a-week offer and then conducted an interview with the BBC -- which was not sanctioned by the club -- where he defended himself against allegation of greed and claimed he was not "a money-grabber."

However, with so many young footballers in the media spotlight, Campbell insists that more must be done to help them develop.

"He's one of the most talented English players coming out of this country. Do not destroy him," he told the Guardian. "Wayne Rooney did a lot of stuff, he got some flack, but it was almost overlooked. 'Oh, you've been a bad boy, let's overlook it again.'

"Raheem Sterling is one of the most talented men coming out of this country. Wake up. PFA, wake up, press wake up and protect this boy.

"Do. Not. Destroy. That. Man. Yes, he's young, yes, things will happen, and pay him the money because he's worth it."
