Referee Neil Swarbrick has apologised for sending off the wrong West Brom player in the Baggies' defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.
Swarbrick sent off West Brom defender Gareth McAuley instead of Craig Dawson in a case of mistaken identity, after Dawson hauled down Wilfried Bony as he raced through on goal 89 seconds into the game.
After the match, the Professional Game Match Officials Board confirmed that Swabrick was aware of his error.
"The referee has confirmed the offence was caused by a different player, which should be addressed now as a case of mistaken identity. The referee has apologised for his error," a PGMOL statement read.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis was furious with the decision after the game and called for a system where managers could challenge to refereeing decisions per game.
