Ronald Koeman: Southampton penalty at Chelsea was right decision

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman said he was "very pleased" with his side's display as they recovered from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues took an early lead through Diego Costa's header, but Dusan Tadic levelled from the spot after Nemanja Matic was adjudged to have fouled Sadio Mane.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster produced fine saves to deny Oscar and substitute Loic Remy as the south coast side held on for a draw.

And Koeman said: "To get a good result against them you need luck, you need a great goalkeeper, you need great organisation in a team... and we had that.

"I am proud of the team. That gives me a very good feeling."

He felt Southampton's penalty was correctly awarded and did not criticise referee Mike Dean for failing to book Matic for a challenge on Mane when the Chelsea man was already on a yellow card.

"In my opinion it's a penalty, yes,'' Koeman added. "It's difficult jobs for referees. [Matic on Mane] is a foul that maybe can be a yellow card, and that means his second one.

"It's always difficult. I'm not supporting referees showing eight, nine, 10 yellow cards every game. In my opinion the referee did a great job today."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was frustrated by the Southampton penalty, saying: "I went to Sky and they told me their pundits said it's a penalty. I went to BBC and they told me it's not a penalty. I went to the radios and they told me it's not a penalty."
