Brendan Rodgers dismisses leaving Liverpool for Manchester City

Brendan Rodgers has effectively ruled himself out of the running for the Manchester City manager's job by insisting that he wants to stay at Liverpool for the long term.

Reports have suggested that the Reds boss is in contention to take over at the Etihad Stadium if Manuel Pellegrini is sacked at the end of the season.

Rodgers guided Liverpool close to their first league title since 1990 last season, when they finished runners-up to Pellegrini's City.

He responded to a poor start to the 2014-15 campaign by altering his formation to a 3-4-3 set-up, which has helped Liverpool build a 12-match unbeaten run in the Premier League and climb to fifth place in the table.

The manager says he is not interested in leaving Liverpool, where he arrived in 2012 from Swansea, and hopes to stay beyond the end of his current contract, which runs until 2018.

"Where do you go from Liverpool?" asked Rodgers. "This is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I've signed a deal here and I want to be here to see that through, absolutely, for sure. And then I hope I've earned enough time to warrant another deal to keep growing and building here.

"I chose to come to Liverpool, because I hoped I could be here for many years. I'm very proud to be here and allowed to work."

Rodgers is also hopeful that vice-captain Jordan Henderson will agree to sign a new contract. Henderson's current deal runs out in June 2016, and the Reds are keen to ensure he doesn't enter its final season without being signed up for longer.

Talks have been ongoing since November with the midfielder. Henderson has captained the side for the last four matches as Steven Gerrard recovers from a hamstring injury.

"I know Jordan Henderson wants to be here at Liverpool," said Rodgers. "I've got no qualms about that.

"We're trying to build something here, so Jordan knows the importance of his position here within the team.

"I hope he's seen how he's improved as a player in the last two-and-a-half years and he will want to continue with that improvement.

"He's a boy who's very happy here. I think it's a separate thing for his agent and the club to sort out, and I know that's what they're looking to do."
