England coach Roy Hodgson keeping tabs on Spurs striker Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could be in line for his first senior England call-up after earning praise from coach Roy Hodgson.

England do not play again until the end of March, when they entertain Lithuania in a Euro 2016 qualifier before travelling to Italy for an international friendly, and Kane's rich vein of form since breaking into the Spurs first team is set to force Hodgson's hand when he names his squad.

Kane has scored 16 goals in all competitions so far this season, including seven in the Premier League, and he is now one of the first names on the teamsheet for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

It would mark the completion of a rise through the England youth ranks for the 21-year-old, who has scored 13 goals in 12 appearances for the under-21s and is set to spearhead the attack at the European U21 Championships in the Czech Republic in June.

With other strikers, such as West Brom's Saido Berahino and Burnley's Danny Ings, also impressing for Gareth Southgate's under-21s, Hodgson suddenly has options up front in addition to the established players like Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck.

"Harry is one of those players, Andros Townsend [also of Spurs and England] being another one, who didn't exactly burst on to the scene in his club side and get straight in," Hodgson said in an interview with SiriusXM FM reported by the Daily Mail.

"They got loaned out first and sent out to different places to learn their trade, if you like, or at least pick up some important aspects of their trade.

"We have watched [Kane] for a while and I worked with him briefly in the under-21s when I filled in for one game [vs. Scotland in August 2013]. Harry has come on in leaps and bounds and I'm not surprised because I know [former coaches] Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand very well.

"They have worked with him at Tottenham and they always believed in him as a goalscorer. It's tremendous to see people like him doing so well and quite strange that in the under-21s a year or two ago we were bemoaning the fact we didn't think our forwards were up to the level of the midfielders.

"And yet suddenly Kane, Saido Berahino and Danny Ings are all doing exceptionally well. It will be a headache for Gareth who he picks to play in the summer [at the European U21 Championship].

"Charlie [Austin, of QPR] is doing very well. He's another one who has come through the lower leagues, a bit like Rickie Lambert [of Liverpool].

"I'm sure people have watched Charlie many times and dismissed him because he doesn't run like the wind.

"You can be a good footballer sometimes without needing to run like the wind and Harry Redknapp has brought the best out of him for QPR."
