Arsene Wenger unsure if Arsenal's Jack Wilshere will need surgery

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he does not know whether midfielder Jack Wilshere will need surgery to resolve the latest ankle injury he sustained in last Saturday's Premier League loss against Manchester United.

Wilshere has a long history of ankle problems and the latest reports in the U.K. newspapers indicate the England midfielder may be set for a three-month spell in the treatment room with his latest problem. Wenger has conceded there is a concern that surgery may be required for the 22-year-old.

"Wilshere sees a specialist tomorrow. We'll know more tomorrow," said Wenger, before he was asked whether there was a possibility of an operation being required to resolve the issue.

"I don't know. The specialist will decide that," said Wenger.

The latest injury to Wilshere is a hammer blow for the player and his manager after a season when he has shown some of his best form and appeared to have overcome the injury problems that have blighted his career.

Wenger's midfield options were further depleted on Wednesday as his skipper Mikel Arteta picked up a calf injury that the Arsenal boss described as "quite serious" during the 2-0 Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund.

Theo Walcott is continuing to struggle with a groin injury he picked up while on international duty with England earlier this month, while striker Yaya Sanogo is also an injury doubt for the Premier League game against West Browmich Albion on Saturday after he was hit by a hamstring problem against Dortmund.

Club record signing Mesut Ozil is another long-term injury victim in the Arsenal squad, while first choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny is also on the sidelines after picking up an injury against United last weekend.
