Paul Gascoigne: Arsenal paid £50,000 towards my medical care

Former Tottenham and England midfielder Paul Gascoigne told The Sun that Arsenal paid 50,000 pounds towards his medical care.

Gascoigne, 47 says that Gunners coach Arsene Wenger arranged for his treatment to be paid for, while also revealing that Spurs asked him to pay for tickets to watch his former club take on Real Madrid.

"I rang up [Arsenal] physio Gary Lewin and told him I wasn't feeling great," he said. "He said to go to hospital as he feared it was pneumonia. Wenger then agreed to arrange 28,000 pounds to pay for treatment.

"Arsenal also paid 22,000 pounds when I had hip treatment."

Gascoigne has had a history of problems with alcohol since retiring in 2004 and has entered rehab on a number of occasions, but told the newspaper he is in good health of late.

He said that while Spurs' rivals Arsenal contributed financially to his recovery, his former club requested that he pay for tickets to attend a Champions League tie at White Hart Lane -- before former Spurs captain and teammate Garry Mabbutt rectified the situation.

"I wanted to watch Spurs against Real Madrid and got told they only had two tickets for 60 pounds," he said.

"I'd have to watch from under the directors' box with some players who played 30 years before me."
