Cesar Azpilicueta plays down 'club vs. country' row with Chelsea, Spain

Chelsea and Spain right-back Cesar Azpilicueta says Blues boss Jose Mourinho has never pressured him not to play for his country, while maintaining that his club and international colleagues Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa are fully committed to the cause for La Roja.

Mourinho had been at loggerheads with Spain coach Vicente del Bosque after centre-forward Costa missed four club games after playing for the European champions during October's international fixtures.

Del Bosque then appeared to try and calm the situation by leaving the Brazil-born player out of his latest squad, only for Fabregas to also miss both of this week's games with a hamstring problem that tests carried out at the national team's camp appeared to show was relatively minor.

There has been speculation in Spain that Mourinho was behind the pair deciding to sit out the international break and concentrate on being fit for their club's upcoming fixtures, with Spain centre-back Sergio Ramos suggesting players should be stronger in such situations and show their commitment to their country.

Asked after Tuesday's 1-0 friendly loss to Germany if the Portuguese coach had ever pressured him not to join up with national squad, Azpilicueta denied the issue had ever come up.

"No," he told reporters. "[Mourinho] knows that I am excited about being in the Spain squad. When it is named I am delighted, and when I am with Chelsea I give my all."

When pressed for his own opinion on the situation surrounding Fabregas and Costa, Azpilicueta again tried to play down any controversy, saying both players had always given their all when they had joined the national team.

"I do not know anything about that, I just talk about myself," he said. "Everyone has their own subjects. It is a tricky subject, each individual knows how they feel. What I see is they have always had maximum commitment [to Spain] when they have been with the squad."

Azpilicueta completed the 90 minutes in Tuesday's friendly, although for competitive fixtures he now looks to be behind Atletico Madrid's Juanfran Torres, who has started all three Euro 2016 qualifiers so far and completed the 90 minutes in Saturday's 3-0 Euro 2016 qualifier win over Belarus.

The former Osasuna and Marseille player said he would prefer to always play, but accepted this was not always going to be the case at present.

"It is clear I want to play," he said. "In the last squad I did not play, we are 23 and sometimes it is for you to watch the game from the bench. But I am always delighted to come here, and happy to have played another game."

Germany midfielder Toni Kroos' 89th-minute long-range effort decided what had been a fairly even contest in Vigo. Azpilicueta said that both sides had used the fixture to try out some new players, and suggested a draw might have been a fairer result.

"The two teams were at the same level," he said. "There were players with many caps on both sides, and also new players. It was the same for the two. Both teams had a lot of youngsters."
