Survey reveals rocketing cost of watching football in England

The cost of watching football has risen by almost twice the rate of inflation since 2011, with fans of Premier League clubs now paying almost four times more for a season ticket than their counterparts in Germany, a new survey has shown.

The BBC Sport Price of Football study reveals that the average price of the cheapest matchday ticket across all four English divisions is 21 pounds 49 pence, up 13 percent since 2011 compared to a 6.8 percent increase in the cost of living.

The average Premier League season ticket costs 508 pounds, compared to 138 pounds in the Bundesliga -- Bayern Munich fans can pay as little as 109 pounds 65 pence, while in Spain Barcelona fans can get a season ticket for 103 pounds 38 pence.

Arsenal are the most expensive team in Europe to watch on a season ticket, with prices ranging from 1,014 pounds to 2,013 pounds.

Manchester City have the cheapest season tickets in the Premier League, with prices starting at 299 pounds.

The price of the cheapest matchday ticket in the Premier League has risen by 15.8 percent, 31.7 percent in League One and 19 percent in League Two. Only in the Championship has it dropped, by 3.2 percent.

Arsenal have dropped their most expensive match-day ticket from 126 pounds last year to 97 pounds now.

Chelsea have the highest-priced cheapest match-day ticket of all the Premier League clubs -- prices at Stamford Bridge begin at 50 pounds.

Derby and Sheffield Wednesday both boast 10-pound matchday tickets -- the cheapest in English football and matched only by Southport in the Conference.

The study also shows the average price of the cheapest matchday ticket in the Scottish top flight has increased by almost eight percent since 2011, up from 18 pounds 92 pence to 20 pounds 42 pence.

Among the survey's other findings are that Manchester United and Manchester City have the joint most expensive replica shirts, at 55 pounds, while the most expensive cups of tea -- costing two pounds 50 pence -- are found at Liverpool, Manchester United and Southampton.
