Out-of-favor Jozy Altidore denies knowledge of Burnley's interest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- If Premier League club Burnley is interested in acquiring out-of-favor Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore during the January transfer window, it comes as news to the American.

A report on Sunday in Britain's Daily Star newspaper claimed that Burnley boss Sean Dyche was "weighing up a move" for the 24-year-old, who has managed one goal in 34 top flight games since joining the Black Cats from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in July of 2013.

"I have no idea," Altidore said Sunday afternoon at Lockhart Stadium, where the U.S. national team trained ahead of its Tuesday friendly against Honduras in nearby Boca Raton [8 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN], when asked by ESPNFC.com if there was any truth to the report.

"I don't know," he said. "I never heard anything."

Last week, Altidore told ESPNFC.com's Jeff Carlisle that he was open to switching teams if his playing time didn't increase before the end of the calendar year.

Altidore has seen just 76 minutes of league action this season. The two-time World Cup veteran scored his only goal of 2014-15 on Sept. 23 in a English League Cup match against Stoke City, but Sunderland manager Gus Poyet left the Florida native on the bench for Sunderland's next two Premier League games.
